I took this color picture of Gussini Shoes on New Hampshire Ave in November some time. A few weeks later I noticed a picture in the Takoma Park Newsletter of the same building, except this time it looked different. Sadly the building burned down. Last weekend I shot a roll of color medium format film. I was impressed by the realistic colors (which I have slightly saturated in this image). It seems the majority of photographers today are shooting on color, which has never really appealed to me for a variety of reasons. But since I take pictures of mostly places and landscapes, perhaps this is a format to more deeply explore. Any opinions?

A lot has happened recently. Unfortunately not with this blog. But that is about to change. A few months ago I picked up a cheap medium format camera called a Yashica-mat EM. Then I went on a road trip to about 8 cities and took a lot of pictures along the way. And today I got a nice scanner. So expect a lot of those squares to be heading this way. History Repeating

I find it interesting that these two pictures are almost taken at exactly the same angle and lighting situation. The left is a Philadelphia public works image of Germantown town hall from 1947. The right is one I took recently. I'm not sure if I had seen the left photo before I took my image. Occasionally I browse the photo archives of phillyhistory.org. But the left image was not in my mind when I took my own. Perhaps subconscious, perhaps a coincidence.

The show is at 20th Century Cool, an antique and artifact store in south philly, 1609 Passyunk. It opens wednesday the 25th at 6, where there will be wine and cheese. One day I decided to go buy some old Life magazines in hopes of cutting them up into some kind of art. To my great surprise, some of the imagery was really interesting, colorful, and strange. Since then, a degree of continuity has started to develop in my collage. They are colorful, and they have a physical sense of place. Something I noticed recently without being deliberate is that the people are often black and white, and the environments are full color. When things like that happen, I have to think that my arrangements come primarily from the subconscious. I am taking imagery from a certain context, and making it mean something completely different. This is the closest thing to dreaming while awake that I can think of.

I shoot black and white film for a few reasons. One is because of the rich legacy of b&w documentary photographers. My favorites include Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Elliot Erwitt. Today there is a total overflow of imagery. Just go on flickr.com and you will see people who post thousands of digital images. I like digital, but since it does not have a physical restrait like the negative, there are no limits to quantity. The flood of pictures becomes completely uninteresting to me, because there is no meaning attached. Each picture you take should hold a truth, a feeling, the pure essence of a moment. Also film still looks way cooler.
